KURT SAYENGA

Kurt Sayenga is a writer, director, producer, showrunner, and sometime photographer based in Hollywood, California. He is on a lifelong mission to bring science, history, and culture to a global audience by harnessing the emotional power of cinema with the long reach of mass media.

Prior to his decades-spanning career, Sayenga worked as a journalist on Capitol Hill and served as editor and publisher of GREED, a magazine geared toward disaffected quasi-intellectual punk rockers. He also set type and designed posters and packages for bands, including Minor Threat, Gray Matter, Happy Go Licky, Dag Nasty, Egghunt, and Fugazi.

Sayenga is a member of the Directors Guild of America and a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science and Arts, where he won a Hopwood Award in Drama and a Roy M. Cowden Fellowship.

Production has begun on Season Two of BREAKTHROUGH. Once again I am serving as Executive Producer/Showrunner.

This season we aim to take the best of National Geographic's legacy and blend it with a modernist film aesthetic. To that end, we have lured in a premium pack of storytellers for our next round of films.

Our directors are:

Ana Lily Amirpour

Shane Carruth

David Lowery

Shalini Kantayya

The Malloys

AG Rojas

Unbound by the conservatism of traditional documentary filmmaking, they will tell provocative stories that run the gamut of scientific innovation. The overall theme of the season explores how breakthrough technology affects human beings, and the social and personal costs that come with every major discovery.
